أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، وَأَبُو طَاهِرٍ الْفَقِيهُ وَأَبُو زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ الْمُزَكِّي وَأَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو، قَالُوا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ أنبأ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْحَكَمِ، أنبأ أَبِي وَشُعَيْبُ بْنُ اللَّيْثِ، قَالَا: أنبأ اللَّيْثُ، عَنِ ابْنِ الْهَادِ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو يَعْنِي ابْنَ أَبِي عَمْرٍو، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحُوَيْرِثِ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ قَالَ: دَخَلْتُ الْمَسْجِدَ فَرَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَارِجًا مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ فَاتَّبَعْتُهُ أَمْشِي وَرَاءَهُ وَلَا يَشْعُرُ بِي حَتَّى دَخَلَ نَخْلًا، فَاسْتَقْبَلَ الْقِبْلَةَ فَسَجَدَ فَأَطَالَ السُّجُودَ وَأَنَا وَرَاءَهُ حَتَّى ظَنَنْتُ أَنَّ اللهَ تَعَالَى تَوَفَّاهُ فَأَقْبَلْتُ أَمْشِي حَتَّى جِئْتُهُ فَطَأْطَأْتُ رَأْسِي أَنْظُرُ فِي وَجْهِهِ فَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ، فَقَالَ: " مَا لَكَ يَا عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ؟ " فَقُلْتُ: لَمَّا أَطَلْتَ السُّجُودَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، خَشِيتُ أَنْ يَكُونَ اللهُ قَدْ تَوَفَّى نَفْسَكَ، فَجِئْتُ أَنْظُرُ فَقَالَ: " إِنِّي لَمَّا رَأَيْتَنِي دَخَلْتُ النَّخْلَ لَقِيتُ جَبْرَائِيلَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ، فَقَالَ: أُبَشِّرُكَ أَنَّ اللهَ تَعَالَى يَقُولُ: مَنْ سَلَّمَ عَلَيْكَ سَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ وَمَنْ صَلَّى عَلَيْكَ صَلَّيْتُ عَلَيْهِ ".
Sayyiduna Abdul-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I entered the mosque and saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) going out of the mosque, so I began walking behind him (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was not aware of me until he (peace and blessings be upon him) entered a garden of date palms. He (peace and blessings be upon him) faced the qiblah and prostrated, and made a very long prostration, while I was standing behind him (peace and blessings be upon him), until I thought that perhaps Allah Almighty had taken his (peace and blessings be upon him) soul. I walked up to him, lowered my head and began looking at his (peace and blessings be upon him) face. He (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head and said: "O Abdul-Rahman! What is the matter with you?" I said: O Messenger of Allah! When you prolonged the prostration, I feared that Allah might have taken your (peace and blessings be upon him) life, so I came to see. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you saw me entering the garden, at that time I met Jibril (peace be upon him), and he said: I give you (peace and blessings be upon him) the good news that Allah Almighty says: Whoever sends salam upon you (peace and blessings be upon him), I send peace upon him, and whoever sends salah (blessings) upon you (peace and blessings be upon him), I send mercy upon him."
