Bayhaqi 3862 — One who forgot the recitation

Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) led the people in the Maghrib prayer and did not recite in it. When he gave the salam, someone said: You did not recite. He said: And the bowing and prostrations, how were they? He said: Very good. He said: Then there is no harm.
This is according to the old view of Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him), and it is to be understood as referring to the obligatory recitation. Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The narrator did not mention here that he performed a prostration for forgetfulness, and he did not repeat the prayer, and he did this in the presence of the Muhajirun and Ansar.
Imam al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: In our view, this is understood as referring to the additional surah (besides Surah al-Fatihah), or to reciting silently in prayers in which the recitation should be aloud.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he repeated the prayer. Narrations on this subject will come in the chapter 'Aqall ma yujzi' (the minimum that suffices), In sha' Allah (if Allah wills).
