(a) Muhammad bin Yusuf (may Allah have mercy on him), the freed slave of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates from his father that Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with them both) led them in prayer and forgot. He was supposed to sit (for the tashahhud) but did not. When he was in the final sitting of the prayer, he performed two prostrations before the salam, then said: "This is how I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) do it." His father said: And that is my view.
(b) Imam al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) also did likewise.
(c) Imam Abu Dawud al-Sijistani (may Allah have mercy on him) stated that when Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) stood up after praying two rak'ahs, he too performed two prostrations in the same way before giving the salam, and this is the view of Imam al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him).
There is a disagreement in what is reported on this from Abdullah bin al-Zubayr.
