Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the salam to his right, he would say: 'As-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah' (Peace and the mercy of Allah be upon you), until the whiteness of his right cheek could be seen, and when he gave the salam to his left, he would say: 'As-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah' (Peace and the mercy of Allah be upon you), until the whiteness of his blessed cheek could be seen.
