(a) Khaythamah bin Abd al-Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Abu Sabrah al-Ju'fi (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: I came to Madinah. Like the students of Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), I too used to place my hands between my thighs in bowing. A man said: What has induced you to do this? I said: Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) used to do so, and he would say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do so.
He said: Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) spoke the truth, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did so for some time, then Allah Almighty issued a new command for him (peace and blessings be upon him). So act upon what the Muslims are agreed upon. The narrator said: When he came back, he did not do tatbiq.
(b) Shaykh al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This is what all the people practise. The hadith of Abu Humayd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) contains the description of the bowing of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). It also shows that the people of Madinah are more knowledgeable about the abrogating and the abrogated than the people of Kufah. 'Wa billahi al-tawfiq' (And success is from Allah).
