Bayhaqi 2543 — The Sunnah of placing the palms on the knees

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ، أنبأ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الصَّفَّارُ، ثنا عَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ الْأَسْفَاطِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ، ثنا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ أَبِي يَعْفُورٍ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ مُصْعَبَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ يَقُولُ: " صَلَّيْتُ إِلَى جَنْبِ أَبِي فَطَبَّقْتُ بَيْنَ كَفِّيَّ، ثُمَّ وَضَعْتُهُمَا بَيْنَ فَخِذِيَّ فَنَهَانِي أَبِي عَنْ ذَلِكَ وَقَالَ: كُنَّا نَفْعَلُ هَذَا فَنُهِينَا عَنْهُ، وَأُمِرْنَا أَنْ نَضَعَ أَيْدِيَنَا عَلَى الرُّكَبِ " رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ، عَنْ أَبِي الْوَلِيدِ.
It is narrated from Abu Ya'fur (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: I heard Mus'ab bin Sa'd (may Allah have mercy on him) say: I prayed beside my father, and I joined my palms together and placed them between my thighs. My father (may Allah be pleased with him) forbade me from that and said: "We too used to do this before; then we were forbidden from it and were commanded to place our hands on the knees."
