(a) In another chain, Abu al-Walid narrates a similar hadith from Shu'bah; in it is that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min al-shaytani al-rajim' (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from Satan the accursed).
(b) He added that Amr said: By nafkh is meant arrogance, by hamz is meant madness, and by nafth is meant composing poetry.
(c) Through another chain the hadith of Abu Dawud is also like this; in it, along with the hadith, there is an addition of some explanation, but he did not attribute it to Amr; rather, he said that someone asked him: What is meant by hamz? He said: The fainting and madness that comes over the son of Adam. Someone asked: What is nafkh? He said: Arrogance. Then someone asked: What is meant by nafth? He told them: Poetry.
