Abdullah bin Wadi'ah bin Khidam bin Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him), of Banu Amr bin Awf, said: Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), was in fact the freed slave of a woman of our tribe called Salma bint Ya'ar. She freed him as a sa'ibah in the Jahiliyyah. When he was killed in the Battle of Yamamah, his inheritance was brought to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). He summoned Wadi'ah bin Khidam (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: This is the inheritance of your freed slave, and you are most entitled to it. He said: O Commander of the Believers! Allah has made us independent of it. The woman of our tribe freed him as a sa'ibah. We have no need of anything from it. So he deposited it in the public treasury.
