Bayhaqi 21146 — The dislike of poetry dominating a person

It is reported from al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That the belly of one of you be filled with pus until it corrupts it is better for him than that it be filled with poetry," meaning such poetry in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is satirised.
Abu Ubayd (may Allah have mercy on him) said: My understanding of this hadith is other than this, because if even half a verse were one in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is satirised, that would be disbelief. Rather, in my view it means that poetry overpowers a person's heart so that because of it he stays away from the remembrance of Allah and the recitation of the Qur'an, whatever kind of poetry it may be.
