Malik bin Abi Maryam says that Abd al-Rahman bin Ghanm al-Ash'ari came to Damascus, and a group of us gathered around him. We mentioned tila' (a thickened, cooked grape drink); some of us permitted it and some disliked it. The narrator says: I came to him after we had become engrossed in the discussion, and he said: I heard Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him), the Companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), narrating from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "People of my Ummah will drink wine, calling it by other than its name, and musical instruments and singing girls will be played over their heads; Allah will cause the earth to swallow them, and He will turn some of them into apes and swine."
