Bayhaqi 20896 — What renders the testimony of the people of innovation

Rabi' bin Sulayman (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked about predestination (qadar), and he said:
What You will comes to pass, even if I do not will it,

and what I will does not come to pass if You do not will it.
You created the servants in accordance with Your knowledge,

and within Your knowledge the young and the old all proceed.
Upon some You bestow favour and some You abase,

some You help and some You do not help.
Among them some are wretched and some are fortunate,

and among them some are ugly and some are handsome.
