Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever swears a false oath in order to consume the property of a Muslim brother will meet Allah while Allah is angry with him." Sayyiduna al-Ash'ath (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! It was exactly so: there was a dispute over land between me and a Jew. I brought the case to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you have proof?" I said: No. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the Jew: "Take the oath." I said: O Messenger of Allah! He will swear and take my property. So Allah revealed this verse: "Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their oaths for a small price, those will have no share in the Hereafter." [Surah Al Imran: 77]
