Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made Abdullah bin al-Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) a scribe. Abdullah bin al-Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) used to write letters, and he would also reply to kings. Such was his trustworthiness that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would instruct him to write to certain kings; then he would write, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would order him to seal it, and he would not read it. Then in the same way he (peace and blessings be upon him) also took Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) as a scribe; he wrote down the revelation and letters to kings. When Abdullah bin al-Arqam and Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with them both) were both absent, he would instruct Sayyiduna Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) to write to the armies, the kings or any person. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him), al-Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him), Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), Khalid bin Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) and many others besides, whose names have been mentioned, were scribes for him (peace and blessings be upon him).
