أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أنبأ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُبْدُوسٍ ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الدَّارِمِيُّ قَالَ: قَرَأْتُ عَلَى أَبِي الْيَمَانِ أَنَّ شُعَيْبَ بْنَ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ أَخْبَرَهُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، أَخْبَرَنِي عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ أَنَّ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: إِنَّ سَعْدَ بْنَ عُبَادَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيَّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ اسْتَفْتَى رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي نَذْرٍ كَانَ عَلَى أُمِّهِ، وَتُوُفِّيَتْ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَقْضِيَهُ، فَأَمَرَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يَقْضِيَهُ عَنْهَا، فَكَانَتْ سُنَّةً بَعْدُ ". رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ أَبِي الْيَمَانِ.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) states that Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about his mother, who had a vow due upon her and died before fulfilling it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to "fulfil the vow", and this became a Sunnah for those who came after.
