Bayhaqi 20146 — One who vows to strike the neck of an idolater

Abu Ghalib mentioned (a hadith) from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) about the funeral prayer. The narrator says that al-Ala' bin Ziyad said: O Abu Hamzah, did you go on campaigns with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: Yes, I took part in the Battle of Hunayn. The idolaters attacked us until we saw our horsemen behind our backs, and a man of the idolaters was killing us. Then Allah defeated them, and they were brought and were pledging allegiance on Islam. One of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I have vowed that if Allah brings us the man who was killing us earlier today, I will certainly strike off his neck. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent, and the man was brought. When he saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: O Messenger of Allah, I have repented to Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not take his pledge, so that the (Companion) could fulfil his vow. He kept presenting himself before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) so that he would order him to kill him, but he was afraid, out of awe of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), to kill him. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw that he was not doing anything, he (peace and blessings be upon him) took his pledge. That (Companion) said: O Messenger of Allah, my vow? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I held back from him today only so that you could fulfil your vow." He said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), why did you not give me a signal? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not fitting for a prophet to make a signal."
