Al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Hayyaj bin Imran al-Burjumi that a slave of his father ran away, and he swore that if he got hold of him he would certainly cut off his hand. When my father got hold of him, he sent me to Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him). I asked him, and he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) during his sermon "urging charity and forbidding mutilation (muthlah)." He said: "Tell your father to expiate his oath and pardon the slave." Hayyaj said: My father sent me to Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he too said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) during his sermon "urging charity and forbidding mutilation (muthlah)." He said: "Tell your father to expiate his oath and pardon his slave."
This chain is connected (mawsul), except that the command to expiate the oath is mawquf in it, stopping at Imran and Samurah. As for al-Hayyaj bin Imran, there is disagreement about his name: it is said to be thus, and it is also said to be Hayyan bin Imran al-Burjumi.
