Hanzalah bin Khuwaylid al-Anbari (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I went out with Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) until he came to the Suddah (a raised place in the market). He turned towards it and said: (O Allah) I ask You for its good and the good of its people, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of its people. Then he walked on until he came to the steps of the mosque, and he heard a man swearing by (a surah of) the Qur'an. He said: O Hanzalah! Do you think this man will expiate his oath? For every verse there is an expiation — or he said: an oath.
