Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Safwan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I brought my father to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for the pledge of emigration (hijrah). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, I will take his pledge for jihad." So I went to Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), who was giving people water to drink, and I said: O Abu al-Fadl! I brought my father to him (peace and blessings be upon him) so that he would take his pledge for emigration, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do so. So Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) set off with him in his shirt, without an upper garment. He came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! You know what (ties) there are between me and Abd al-Rahman; take his father's pledge for emigration. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no emigration." Then Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) adjured him by an oath to take the pledge for emigration. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stretched out his hand and said: "I fulfil my uncle's oath, but there is no emigration."
Al-Bukhari said: "Abd al-Rahman bin Safwan, or Safwan bin Abd al-Rahman, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)" — Yazid bin Abi Ziyad narrated it so from Mujahid; it is not sound.
