Ammar bin Sa'd narrates from his father Sa'd al-Qaraz (may Allah be pleased with him) that this is the adhan of Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) and his iqamah, which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to give: 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah). Then he repeats and says: 'Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, hayya 'ala al-salah, hayya 'ala al-salah, hayya 'ala al-falah, hayya 'ala al-falah, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illallah' (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, come to prayer, come to prayer, come to success, come to success, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no god but Allah). And the iqamah is once each, and he would say 'Qad qamat al-salah' (The prayer has been established) also once. Then he mentioned the rest of the long hadith.
(b) It is narrated from Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught him this adhan; he mentioned 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest) four times at its beginning, then mentioned the adhan with tarji' (repetition of the testimonies).
(c) Ibrahim bin Abd al-Aziz bin Abd al-Malik bin Abi Mahdhurah said: I found my grandfather, my father and my family saying the iqamah, and when they said it, he mentioned the iqamah once each and said: 'Qad qamat al-salah, qad qamat al-salah, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illallah' (The prayer has been established, the prayer has been established, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no god but Allah).
(d) Al-Humaydi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: In both of them (the adhan and the iqamah), this is the view of the people of Makkah. (e) Al-Humaydi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) testified that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught him at the beginning of the adhan: 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest), and Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) testified concerning Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) to saying it once, so in this he agreed with Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him), while Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) had an addition and was a witness to it over the other. So we adopted 'Qad qamat al-salah' (The prayer has been established) twice, because Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said that Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) was ordered to say the adhan in pairs and the iqamah singly, except for 'Qad qamat al-salah'. Thus the narration of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) is a witness that Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) was ordered to say the words 'Qad qamat al-salah' twice; for this reason 'Qad qamat al-salah' is said twice, and also because people argue against the people of Madinah on the basis of their saying it twice. The Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This statement that al-Humaydi (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned, he took from his teacher Muhammad bin Idris al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him). Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned it in his book al-Qadim.
