Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Ma'qil al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about the hyena, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not eat it, nor do I forbid it." The narrator said: I said: Since you (peace and blessings be upon him) do not forbid it, I will eat it. The narrator said: I said: "What is your view about the spiny-tailed lizard (dabb)?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I neither eat it nor forbid it." The narrator said: Since you (peace and blessings be upon him) do not forbid it, I will eat it. He said: I said: "O Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), what is your (peace and blessings be upon him) view about the rabbit?" He said: "I do not eat it, nor do I declare it unlawful." The narrator said: Since you (peace and blessings be upon him) do not declare it unlawful, I will eat it. He said: I asked: "O Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), what is your (peace and blessings be upon him) view about the wolf?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Does anyone eat that?" The narrator said: I asked: "O Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), what is your (peace and blessings be upon him) view about the fox?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Does anyone eat the fox too?"
(b) Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab, Ali bin Abi Talib and Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) held that when a muhrim hunts a hyena, he must give a ram in compensation for it.
This hadith has also been narrated from Khuzaymah bin Jaz' (may Allah be pleased with him), agreeing with al-Sulami's hadith in part and differing from it in part; both chains contain weakness.
