Ka'b bin Alqamah says that a Christian passed by Arafah bin al-Harith al-Kindi (may Allah be pleased with him), and he invited him to Islam. He spoke against the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so Arafah (may Allah be pleased with him) struck him on the nose. The matter was brought to Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him), and Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We have given them a covenant. Arafah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Allah forbid that we gave them (the covenant) on the condition that they openly revile the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)! We only gave it to them on the condition that we leave them alone with their churches, saying in them whatever they like; that we do not burden them with what they cannot bear; that if an enemy intends (harm to) them, we fight on their behalf; and that we leave them to their own laws, unless they come willingly accepting our laws, in which case we judge between them by the law of Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him); and if they keep away from us, we do not interfere with them. Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You have spoken the truth. And Arafah (may Allah be pleased with him) is a Companion.
