Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates concerning the story of the prohibition of wine, and in it is: When the verse of Surah al-Nisa was revealed, "O you who believe, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated, until you know what you are saying" [Surah al-Nisa: 43], the caller on behalf of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would announce: "Let no intoxicated person come near the prayer."
