Urwah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Grant me al-Zubayr the Jew, so that I may repay the favour he did me on the day of Bu'ath. He (peace and blessings be upon him) granted him to him. Sayyiduna Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) asked al-Zubayr: Do you recognise me? He said: Yes! Would a man not recognise his brother? Sayyiduna Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I want to repay your favour of the day of Bu'ath. Al-Zubayr the Jew said: Repay it; a noble man repays only a noble man. Sayyiduna Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has granted him to me; I have released this captive of mine. Then al-Zubayr said: (What of) my wife and children? So Sayyiduna Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) came back and said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has returned your wife and children as well. Al-Zubayr said: (And) my garden on which my family lived? So Sayyiduna Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) granted that as well. Sayyiduna Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has returned your family and your wealth; "accept Islam and you will be safe." Al-Zubayr said: What became of my two companions? He mentioned men of his people. Sayyiduna Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: They have been killed and done with; perhaps Allah Almighty has spared you only for some good. Al-Zubayr said: O Thabit! I ask you by Allah that you will only have repaid my favour when you join me with these companions of mine, for life after them holds no good for me. So Sayyiduna Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) told the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the order was given for al-Zubayr to be killed. (b) Musa bin Uqbah (may Allah have mercy on him) mentions that on that day he was old and blind.
