Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), describing the sending of al-Walid bin Uqbah to collect the charity, says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent al-Walid bin Uqbah bin Abi Mu'ayt to Banu al-Mustaliq to collect the charity from them. When the news of his coming reached them, they were glad and came out to receive him, to welcome the envoy of the Messenger of Allah. When al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) was told that they were coming out to meet him, he went back to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, they have withheld the zakah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry (on hearing this). While he (peace and blessings be upon him) was still considering fighting them, the delegation of Banu al-Mustaliq arrived. They said: We have learned that your envoy turned back halfway through the journey, and we feared that his return was due to some anger of yours against us, and we seek refuge in Allah from the anger of Allah and the anger of His Messenger. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was concealing (his intention) from them and intended to attack them, but Allah Almighty revealed their excuse, saying: "O you who believe, if a wicked person brings you news, verify it carefully, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and then become regretful over what you have done." [Surah al-Hujurat: 6]
