Bayhaqi 17900 — The ruler's responsibilities toward the army

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) as the commander of an army, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) were also in the army. When they reached the place of battle, Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered the army not to light any fire. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) became angry and intended to go to him, but Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stopped him and told him that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had made him commander only because he knows the affairs of war. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) held back.
