Abdul-Rahman bin Azhar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of Hunayn making his way through the people, asking about the lodging of Khalid bin al-Walid. A drunk man was brought, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to those with him: "Beat him." So they beat him with whatever was in their hands, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) threw dust on him. Then a drunk man was brought to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and he estimated what their beating had been that day and gave forty.
Al-Zuhri said: Then Humayd bin Abdul-Rahman told me from Ibn Wabarah al-Kalbi, who said: Khalid bin al-Walid sent me to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). I came to him, and with him were Uthman bin Affan, Abdul-Rahman bin Awf, Ali, Talhah and al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them), reclining with him in the mosque. I said: Khalid bin al-Walid has sent me to you; he conveys his greeting of peace to you and says: The people have become absorbed in wine and have come to think lightly of its punishment. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Here they are with you. Then he asked them, and Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We see that when he becomes drunk he raves, and when he raves he slanders, and upon the slanderer are eighty lashes. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Convey to your companion what he has said. So Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) flogged eighty, and Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) flogged eighty. When a weak man who had slipped once was brought to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he would give him forty. Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) also flogged both eighty and forty.
