Zakariyya bin Adi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Ibn al-Mubarak (may Allah have mercy on him) came to Kufah while he had some illness. Waki' (may Allah have mercy on him), his companions and the people of Kufah came to him and began discussing with him. When they reached (the issue of) drink, Ibn al-Mubarak (may Allah have mercy on him) began citing to them hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from the Muhajirun and the Ansar, and they said: "No, narrate to us from our own hadith." So Ibn al-Mubarak (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated through al-Hasan bin Amr al-Fuqaymi, from Fudayl bin Amr, from Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him), that they used to say: "A drink in which intoxication develops may never be drunk." At that their heads bowed. Ibn al-Mubarak (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "I have never seen people stranger than these: I narrated to them the reports of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from the Muhajirun, the Ansar and the Tabi'in, and they would not accept them; then I narrated from Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) and mentioned his saying, and their heads bowed."
