Bayhaqi 17277 — Reports on confessing to theft and retracting it; Ata

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that a thief was brought to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). The thief said: I have never stolen before this. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You are lying; it is not befitting of Allah Almighty to expose a servant's sin the first time. Then he cut off his hand.
