Bayhaqi 16059 — From his father that Sayyiduna Ali used to go out

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو، ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ الْأَصَمُّ، ثنا بَحْرٌ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَنَسُ بْنُ عِيَاضٍ، عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، كَانَ يَخْرُجُ إِلَى الصُّبْحِ وَفِي يَدِهِ دِرَّتُهُ يُوقِظُ بِهَا النَّاسَ، فَضَرَبَهُ ابْنُ مُلْجَمٍ، فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: أَطْعِمُوهُ وَاسْقُوهُ وَأَحْسِنُوا إِسَارَهُ، فَإِنْ عِشْتُ فَأَنَا وَلِيُّ دَمِي، أَعْفُو إِنْ شِئْتُ، وَإِنْ شِئْتُ اسْتَقَدْتُ.
Ja'far bin Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to go out at dawn with his whip, with which he would wake the people. Ibn Muljam struck him, and he said: "Feed him, give him drink and keep him well as a captive. If I live, I am myself the guardian of my blood: I will pardon him if I wish, or take retaliation from him if I wish."
