أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ فِي آخَرِينَ قَالُوا: أنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ ⦗٧٧٢⦘ يَعْقُوبَ، أنا الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، أنا الشَّافِعِيُّ، أنا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ كَتَبَ إِلَى أُمَرَاءِ الْأَجْنَادِ فِي رِجَالٍ غَابُوا عَنْ نِسَائِهِمْ فَأَمَرَهُمْ " أَنْ يَأْخُذُوهُمْ بِأَنْ يُنْفِقُوا أَوْ يُطَلِّقُوا فَإِنْ طَلَّقُوا بَعَثُوا بِنَفَقَةِ مَا حَبَسُوا ".
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to the commanders of the armies regarding men who were absent from their wives, and ordered them to hold them to account: either they should provide maintenance or divorce; and if they divorced, they should send the maintenance for the period they had withheld (it).
