(a) Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) says that Umm Habibah bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her), who was the wife of Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), had prolonged bleeding (istihadah) for seven years. She complained of it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is not menstruation; rather it is from a vein. When menstruation comes, abandon the prayer, and when it has gone, take a ritual bath and pray." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) says that Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) used to sit in a tub that belonged to her sister Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her), until the redness of the blood would rise above the water. The mention of the ritual bath in this hadith is sahih (authentic).
(b) As for his (peace and blessings be upon him) words "When menstruation comes and when it goes," al-Awza'i alone narrated them from among the trustworthy students of al-Zuhri. What is correct is that Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) had a regular habit, and that these words were narrated by Hisham bin Urwah from his father from Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) in the story of Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh (may Allah be pleased with her).
