Al-Mughirah bin al-Dahhak (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Umm Hakim bint Asid informed me from her mother that her husband died and her eyes were ailing, so she applied kohl al-jala'. Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The correct form is kohl al-jala'. She sent a freed slave woman of hers to Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) and asked her about kohl al-jala'. She said: She should not apply it except in a matter of absolute necessity; then she may apply it at night and wipe it off during the day. Then she said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me when Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) died, and I had applied sabir (aloe) to my eyes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Umm Salamah, what is this?" I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), it is only sabir; there is no perfume in it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It brightens the face, so apply it at night and remove it during the day, and do not comb your hair with perfume or with henna, for it is a dye." She said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), with what shall I comb my hair? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "With lote-tree leaves (sidr); cover your head with it."
