Ikrimah narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), concerning the story of Hilal bin Umayyah and his wife, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had li'an performed between them. After the husband's li'an, the woman gave four testimonies, swearing by Allah, that he was a liar. When the turn of the fifth testimony came, she was told: Fear Allah; the punishment of this world is far lighter than the punishment of the Hereafter, and this (testimony) is what makes the punishment of Allah binding. She remained silent for a little while, then said: I will not disgrace my people. She gave the fifth testimony as well, that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he was truthful, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) separated the two of them. And he said: "The child is not to be attributed to a father, yet neither the child nor the mother is to be accused; whoever accuses the mother or the child will be given the prescribed punishment (hadd)." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) ruled: "The husband owes her neither housing nor food, because the two were separated without divorce and without death."
