Sa'id bin Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) says: In the time of Mus'ab bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) I was asked about the two who perform li'an: are they to be separated? I did not know what to answer, so I went to the house of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and asked permission to enter, and I was told that he was sleeping. He heard my voice and said: "Give Ibn Jubayr permission." The narrator says: I went in to him, and Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "What has brought you at this hour?" At that time he had spread out the saddle-cloth of his mount and was reclining on a leather pillow stuffed with palm fibre. I said: O Abu Abd al-Rahman! Are the two who perform li'an to be separated? He said: "'Subhan Allah' (Glory be to Allah)! Yes. The first to ask about this was so-and-so son of so-and-so; he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! What is your view: if one of us sees a man with his wife, what should he do? If he speaks, he will be speaking of a very grave matter; and if he stays silent, he will be keeping silent over just as grave a matter." The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not answer him. Then, when he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again, he said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! The matter I asked you about, I myself have been afflicted with it." Then Allah, the Lord of Might, revealed these verses of Surah al-Nur: "And those who accuse their wives" [Surah al-Nur: 6]. The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called the man, recited these verses to him, admonished him clearly and said: "The punishment of this world is far lighter than the punishment of the Hereafter." He said: By the One who sent you with the truth! I have not lied against her. The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called the woman, recited these verses to her as well, admonished her clearly and said: "The punishment of this world is far lighter than the punishment of the Hereafter." She said: By the One who sent you with the truth! This man has lied. The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began with the man: he bore witness four times by Allah (swearing) that he was among the truthful, and in the fifth testimony he said that the curse of Allah be upon him if he was a liar. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to the woman: she bore witness four times by Allah that the man was a liar, and in the fifth testimony she said that the wrath of Allah be upon her if the man was among the truthful. The narrator says: Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) separated the two of them.
