Ikrimah narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Hilal bin Umayyah accused his wife, before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), with Sharik bin Sahma'. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Produce witnesses, or else you will be lashed on your back." He said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! When one of us finds a man with his wife, should he start looking for witnesses? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, you must produce witnesses; otherwise lashes will fall on your back." At this Hilal said: By the One who sent you with the truth, I am certainly truthful, and Allah will surely reveal a ruling that will save my back from the lashes. Then Jibril came down, and these verses were revealed to him (peace and blessings be upon him): "And those who accuse their wives and have no witnesses except themselves" up to His words: "and the fifth (time) that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he is of the truthful" [Surah al-Nur: 6-9]. After that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called both of them. Hilal testified to his truthfulness, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah knows that one of you is lying; so is one of you ready to repent?" Then his wife stood up and testified to her truthfulness. When she was about to testify the fifth time, the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said: The fifth testimony will make the wrath of Allah binding if the husband is truthful. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: The woman hesitated and held back, and we felt that she would retract her position, but she said: I will not disgrace my people for all time. Then she completed the testimony, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Watch her; if she gives birth to a child with dark (kohl-like) eyes, heavy buttocks and thick shins, then it is Sharik bin Sahma's." When she gave birth to a child of that description, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Had the ruling of the Book of Allah not already been revealed, I would have dealt with this woman."
