Ata bin Yasar (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Khuwaylah bint Tha'labah (may Allah be pleased with her) was married to Aws bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him). Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) made zihar from her, and Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) suffered from bouts of madness. Khuwaylah (may Allah be pleased with her) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said that Aws had made zihar from her; she also mentioned his illness and said: I have come to you so that he may be shown compassion, because he has many benefits from me. Allah, the Lord of Might, revealed the Qur'an, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell him to free a neck (slave)." She said: He neither has a slave nor owns one. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell him to fast two consecutive months." She said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! By Allah, if you were to burden him with three days, he would not be able to do even that; and it was the season of heat. He said: "Tell him to feed sixty poor people." She said: He is not able to do that either. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let him go to so-and-so son of so-and-so, collect a basket of charity dates, and give it in charity to sixty poor people."
