أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ، نا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ، أَنَا الرَّبِيعُ قَالَ: قَالَ الشَّافِعِيُّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: أَمَّا مَا رَوَيْتُ فِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ فَمُرْسَلٌ وَحَدِيثُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ بَذِيمَةَ لَا يُسْنِدُهُ غَيْرُهُ عَلِمْتُهُ يَعْنِي لَا يُوصِلُهُ غَيْرُهُ قَالَ: وَلَوْ كَانَ هَذَا ثَابِتًا فَكُنْتُ إِنَّمَا بِقَوْلِهِ اعْتَلَلْتُ أَكَانَ بِضْعَةَ عَشَرَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَوْلَى أَنْ يُؤْخَذَ بِقَوْلِهِمْ أَوْ وَاحِدًا وَاثْنَيْنِ.
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: As for what I narrated on this from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), it is mursal; and the hadith of Ali bin Badhimah, no one other than him narrates it with a connected chain, as far as I know. He said: And even if this were established, and I were relying only on his statement, would ten-odd of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) be more worthy to have their statement adopted, or one or two?
