Abd al-Rahman bin Ayman asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), while Abu al-Zubayr was listening: "What is your view about a man who divorces his wife while she is menstruating?" He said: Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) divorced (his wife) while she was menstruating in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "Abdullah bin Umar has divorced his wife while she is menstruating?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let him take her back." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) returned the wife to him, and said: "When she becomes pure, let him divorce her or keep her." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "O Prophet, when you divorce women, divorce them" 'fi qubuli 'iddatihinna' (at the start of their waiting period) [Surah al-Talaq: 1].
