Amir bin Sa'd al-Bajali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I came to Qarazah bin Ka'b and Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he also mentioned a third; Abd al-Malik says: his name escaped me. Some girls were beating the duff and singing, and I said: "Do you allow this, while you are Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" They said: "We have been given permission at weddings, and for wailing at a time of calamity."
(b) Sharik says that Qarazah and Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them both) stated that weeping at a time of calamity is permitted; Sharik says: I think he said: weeping without wailing.
