Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), or someone else, said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sought permission to visit Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "'As-salamu 'alayka wa rahmatullah' (Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah)." Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "'Wa 'alayka as-salamu wa rahmatullah' (And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah)", but he did not let the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) hear it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the greeting three times, and Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) replied three times, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not hear it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned back, and Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) followed him and said: May my father be ransomed for you! Every time you (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the greeting, these ears of mine heard it, and I replied to you (peace and blessings be upon him), but I did not let you (peace and blessings be upon him) hear it, because I loved to receive more of your (peace and blessings be upon him) greetings of peace and blessing. Then they entered the house, and Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) placed raisins before him (peace and blessings be upon him). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished eating, he said: "'Akala ta'amakumul-abrar, wa sallat 'alaykumul-mala'ikah, wa aftara 'indakumus-sa'imun' (May the righteous eat your food, may the angels pray for you, and may those who fast break their fast with you)."
