حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، أنا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ الْبَصْرِيُّ بِمَكَّةَ نا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الزَّعْفَرَانِيُّ، نا أَسْبَاطُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، نا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ قَالَ: دَخَلَ نَفَرٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ فَقَرَّبَ إِلَيْهِمْ خُبْزًا وَخَلًّا فَقَالَ: كُلُوا فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: " نِعْمَ الْإِدَامُ الْخَلُّ، إِنَّهُ هَلَاكٌ بِالرَّجُلِ أَنْ يَدْخُلَ عَلَيْهِ النَّفَرُ مِنْ إِخْوَانِهِ فَيَحْتَقِرَ مَا فِي بَيْتِهِ أَنْ يُقَدِّمَهُ إِلَيْهِمْ، وَهَلَاكٌ بِالْقَوْمِ أَنْ يَحْتَقِرُوا مَا قُدِّمَ إِلَيْهِمْ ".
Abdullah bin Ubayd bin Umayr (may Allah have mercy on him) said that a group of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) came to Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he placed bread and vinegar before them and said: "Eat, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'The best condiment is vinegar. It is enough ruin for a man that his brothers come to him and he considers what is in his house too insignificant to offer them; and it is enough ruin for people that they consider what is offered to them insignificant.'"
