It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was delivering the sermon to the people when suddenly a man came, and he (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Why were you held back until this time?" The man said: "I heard the call to prayer and performed ablution." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Only ablution? Did you not hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: 'When anyone goes to the mosque, let him take a ritual bath'?" (b) In the narration of Yahya bin Abi Kathir the words are: "When one of you goes to the Friday prayer, let him take a ritual bath." Al-Awza'i reported these words from Yahya: "When one of you comes." Mu'awiyah bin Sallam reported these words from Yahya: "When one of you comes."
