Urwah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) stood up in Makkah and said: There are people whose hearts Allah has blinded just as He has blinded their eyes; they give fatwas permitting mut'ah marriage. He was alluding to a certain man. That man called out to him and said: You are crude and harsh. By my life, mut'ah marriage used to be practised in the time of the leader of the pious, meaning the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Then try it on yourself. By Allah, if you do it, I will stone you with your stones.
(b) Khalid bin al-Muhajir bin Sayf Allah (may Allah have mercy on him) said that he was sitting with a man when someone came and asked him about mut'ah marriage. Ibn Abi Amrah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Wait a moment. The man said: It was practised in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Ibn Abi Amrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This was a concession at the beginning of Islam for one compelled to it, just as a person may eat carrion, blood and the flesh of swine when compelled; then Allah perfected the religion and forbade it.
(c) Al-Rabi' bin Sabrah al-Juhani (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him): In the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I made a mut'ah marriage with a woman of Banu Amir in exchange for two red cloaks; then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade mut'ah marriage.
(d) Ibn Shihab (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I heard al-Rabi' bin Sabrah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrating this to Umar bin Abd al-Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) while I was sitting there.
