Chapter: It being permitted to him (peace and blessings be upon him) to call one who is praying and he answers him, even though he is in prayer

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، وَأَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو قَالَا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ ⦗١٠٣⦘ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، نا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مَرْزُوقٍ، ثنا وَهْبُ بْنُ جَرِيرٍ، ثنا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ خُبَيْبِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ حَفْصِ بْنِ عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُعَلَّى الْأَنْصَارِيِّ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ دَعَاهُ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي فَصَلَّى ثُمَّ أَتَاهُ فَقَالَ: " مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تُجِيبَنِي إِذْ دَعَوْتُكَ؟ " قَالَ: إِنِّي كُنْتُ أُصَلِّي، فَقَالَ: " أَلَمْ يَقُلِ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اسْتَجِيبُوا لِلَّهِ وَلِلرَّسُولِ إِذَا دَعَاكُمْ} [الأنفال: ٢٤]، الْآيَةَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَلَا أُعَلِّمُكَ أَعْظَمَ سُورَةٍ فِي الْقُرْآنِ؟ " قَالَ: فَكَأَنَّهُ نَسِيَهَا أَوْ نَسِيَ، قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، الَّذِي قُلْتَ لِي، قَالَ: " الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ هِيَ السَّبْعُ الْمَثَانِي، وَالْقُرْآنُ الْعَظِيمُ الَّذِي أُوتِيتُهُ " أَخْرَجَهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ مِنْ حَدِيثِ شُعْبَةَ.
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id bin al-Mu'alla al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called him while he was praying. When he completed the prayer, he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What prevented you (from answering) when I called you?" The Companion said: I was praying. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Has Allah Almighty not said in the Qur'an: 'O you who believe, respond to Allah and the Messenger when he calls you' [Surah al-Anfal: 24]?" Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not teach you the greatest surah in the Qur'an?" The narrator said: It was as if he had forgotten it, or been made to forget. I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), what was it you (peace and blessings be upon him) told me? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "'All praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds' [Surah al-Fatihah: 2]: it is the seven oft-repeated verses and the Great Qur'an that I have been given."
