أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ الْقَطَّانُ، بِبَغْدَادَ، أنبأ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ دُرُسْتَوَيْهِ، ثنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ، ثنا أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْمُقْرِئُ، ثنا اللَّيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنِ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي الْوَلِيدِ، أَنَّ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنَ خَارِجَةَ، أَخْبَرَهُ عَنْ خَارِجَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ، أَنَّ نَفَرًا دَخَلُوا عَلَى أَبِيهِ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ فَقَالُوا: حَدِّثْنَا عَنْ بَعْضِ أَخْلَاقِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: كُنْتُ جَارَهُ، فَكَانَ إِذَا نَزَلَ الْوَحْيُ بَعَثَ إِلِيَّ فَآتِيهِ، فَأَكْتُبُ الْوَحْيَ، وَكُنَّا إِذَا ذَكَرْنَا الدُّنْيَا ذَكَرَهَا مَعَنَا، وَإِذَا ذَكَرْنَا الْآخِرَةَ ذَكَرَهَا مَعَنَا وَإِذَا ذَكَرْنَا الطَّعَامَ ذَكَرَهُ مَعَنَا، أَوَ كُلُّ هَذَا نُحَدِّثُكُمْ عَنْهُ؟ ".
A group came to Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: Tell us a hadith about the character of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was his (peace and blessings be upon him) neighbour. When revelation came down, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would send for me, and I would write down the revelation. When we spoke of this world, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would speak of it with us; when we remembered the Hereafter, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would do so too; and when we spoke of food, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would do so too. All these things we narrate to you about him (peace and blessings be upon him).
