(a) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Khuzaymah bin Thabit al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said concerning wiping over leather socks: "The resident wipes for a day and a night, and the traveller for three days and three nights."
(b) Imam al-Tirmidhi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) about this hadith, and he said: In my view the narration of Khuzaymah bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) about leather socks is not authentic, because Abu Abdullah al-Jadali is not established to have heard from Sayyiduna Khuzaymah (may Allah be pleased with him). And Shu'bah (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Ibrahim al-Nakha'i (may Allah have mercy on him) is not established to have heard the hadith of wiping from Abu Abdullah al-Jadali. (c) The Shaykh said: The account of Za'idah from Mansur is evidence that Shu'bah's report is correct; it has already passed at the beginning of the chapter. (d) This narration was also reported by Dhawwad bin Ulbah al-Harithi, and he is weak; he narrates it from Mutarrif from al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) from Abu Abdullah al-Jadali.
(b) Sayyiduna Khuzaymah bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The traveller wipes for three days." He said: Had we asked for more, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would have given us more.
