It is narrated from Sayyiduna Usamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered a garden and went to relieve himself. Sayyiduna Usamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I asked Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him): What did he do? Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to relieve himself, then performed ablution: he washed his face and hands, wiped his head and wiped over his leather socks.
(b) The Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Al-Aswaf is a garden in Madinah. (c) Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The hadith of Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) indicates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped while resident as well, because Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) understood it as applying to residence. (d) The Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The hadith of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and others concerning the time limit is evidence that wiping is permissible while resident.
