Jabir (al-Hanafi) said: A man from Banu Hashim told me that Aqil bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) killed a man at Mu'tah and found on him a ring with a red stone set in it, bearing an image. He brought it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) took it and looked at it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If only there were no image on it!" Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave it to him (Aqil). He said: It is with us.
This shows that the hadith has a basis. The Jabir from whom Abu Khaythamah narrated is al-Hanafi, and the one from whom Ibn Aqil narrated is Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both).
The Shaykh said: They differed about who killed Marhab. Some said Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) killed him, and some said Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) killed him.
