Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the verses "And do not approach the wealth of the orphan except in the best way" [Surah al-An'am: 152] and "Indeed, those who consume the wealth of orphans unjustly are only consuming fire into their bellies, and they will burn in a blaze" [Surah al-Nisa: 10] were revealed, everyone who had an orphan with him separated the orphan's food and drink from his own food and drink. He would keep aside what was left over of his food and drink until the orphan himself ate it or it spoiled. This was very hard on the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), and they mentioned it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then Allah Almighty revealed: "They ask you about orphans. Say: Improvement for them is best, and if you mix your affairs with theirs, they are your brothers" [Surah al-Baqarah: 220]. So they mixed their food and drink with their own food and drink.
