Yusuf bin Abdullah bin Salam narrates from his grandmother Umm Ma'qil (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the Farewell Hajj, he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the people to prepare to go with him. We also prepared, but then I was afflicted with measles or smallpox. I fell ill, and so did Abu Ma'qil (may Allah be pleased with him). As for Abu Ma'qil (may Allah be pleased with him), he died of that illness. She said: We had a camel with which we used to water our date palms, and it was the one on which we intended to perform Hajj. Abu Ma'qil (may Allah be pleased with him) dedicated it in the path of Allah. The illness kept us occupied, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from the Hajj, I had recovered from my illness, and I came to him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Umm Ma'qil! What prevented you from performing Hajj with us?" She said: I said: By Allah! We had prepared for it, but this illness struck us. It took Abu Ma'qil (may Allah be pleased with him), and I was ill. Now that I have recovered, (I find that) our camel on which we intended to perform Hajj had been dedicated by Abu Ma'qil (may Allah be pleased with him) in the path of Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why did you not set out on it? Hajj too is in the path of Allah. But now that you have missed the Hajj, perform Umrah in Ramadan, for that too will be like a Hajj." The narrator said: She used to say: Hajj is Hajj and Umrah is Umrah, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said this regarding it; I do not know whether it was specifically for me because I had missed the Hajj, or for people in general. Yusuf (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I narrated this hadith to Marwan, who was the governor of Madinah in the time of Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: Has anyone else heard this hadith from her along with you? I said: Ma'qil bin Abi Ma'qil (may Allah be pleased with him), and he is a Bedouin man. Marwan sent for him, and he narrated the hadith just as I had narrated it. I said: O Marwan! She (Umm Ma'qil, may Allah be pleased with her) is still alive in her house. After that he was not satisfied with our narration until he rode to her, and then she narrated this hadith to him.
